Response to Infographic

Thanks to a post on Twitter I saw this interesting infographic posted of the results of a survey of young kids.  I have to say what immediately struck me was the fact that 6% indicated they wanted to make games (that is to say want to be programmers!) when they grow up. While 13% (the third highest) indicated they wanted to learn more about computers and technology. If this data is accurate, then why is there such a disconnect? Why are our numbers in CS courses so small? This reminds me of the statistics about girls and science. While working at an all girls school I became keenly aware that the “drop out of science” among girls happened in middle school. Apparently we are not only losing our girls, we are losing our potential programmers as well. The work of code.org is amazing, but obviously we need to put PSA’s for even younger audiences…
